Mercury Bell Family
the mercury bell family was completed on june 4, 2018. it’s the sixth family in the ongoing art breeding experiment, in which i choose two parent art pieces, destroy them and mix together their fragments, and rebuild them as new child pieces.
the mercury family is a first-generation set. this means the child pieces are reconstructed from parents that have never been previously bred. you can learn more about the terminology of this project in my glossary of art breeding terms.
the parent drawings
these two drawings came from the same sequence i made while watching the show, breaking bad. each uses the exact same type of paper and the exact same combination of pen and watercolor. because of this i knew it would be a smooth set to blend together.
from left to right their names are fulminated mercury and the bell.
when i breed a set of art pieces, i create a name for the family based on two things:
- some reference to both of the parent names
- the vibe i get from how the child pieces turned out
this way i preserve some of the history in the name itself.
i cut the originals into about 200 hexagon pieces and reassembled them into the three new drawings you’re about to see.
the child drawings
in this family, i introduced the variation of a colored ground. until this version, i had only used white or black paper as the substrate. the two parents yielded three children.
the parent drawings were each 11″ x 9″, and the child drawings are 9″ x 12″.
